Who Says Only Children Have Toys

Those of us who have children will know that no matter what, young children will scramble to the toy section of shopping center or a departmental store.

When they become teenagers their taste for toys would have changed to gadgets like PSP, X-Box, or Nintendo WII.

When teens become young adults (especially nowadays), have no qualms getting a pair of branded sunglasses or shoes that cost 5 or 6 hundreds bucks. And we parents just can’t understand why they need to spend so much on these things.

But are we saying adults who are parents do not indulge in toys anymore?

NO!

Sometime we hear people telling us, “I don’t understand why this friend of mine spends so much money and time on his car or motorcycle. Or it could be a Hi Fi set or a Home Theater system.

Ever heard this familiar husband's remarks, “What? This handbag costs $2K or this pair of shoes costs me $1K!

So the point is – WHO SAYS ONLY CHILDREN HAVE TOYS.

Let me introduce the latest TOY bought by a member of Changi Cycling Group.

Cenilli Estrada - Full Shimano Dura Ace gear system A cool $5.5K all in.

These are our TOYs & Cycling is what we DO

This is our Toy - BICYCLE and cycling is what we do. Our spouse may not understand why do we need to spend thousand of dollars on our toys!
"What is wrong with the $80 bike that we see people park at MRT stations", they said.

As a consolation to our spouses, at least our TOYS are bicycles (costly they may be). When we cycle, we keep fit and stay healthy.

Just be at Changi Village Hawker Center or East Coast Hawker Center they will see some Senior Citizen with "THEIR TOYS" - young and sexy, enjoying seafood dinner with a jug of beer with their toys is what they do.

When our spouse compare our TOYs with these Senior Citizen young & sexy "TOYs", hopefully they will encourage us to cycle more and maybe,(I say maybe) they will know what to get for our next birthday

Day or Night Cycling – Which Is Better?

It is common to see that over the weekends or during holidays, groups of cycling enthusiasts cycling in various parts of urban Singapore. This is despite the fact that we are one of the most urbanized country in the world with few or if I may say, no country-side roads at all for cycling.

Cycling for these enthusiasts is mainly on major roads cutting through towns; and even the city area. This is something that cyclists do in Singapore for they have no other choice.

Cyclists at times, invoke the wrath of motorists who felt that cyclists are intruding into their territories – i.e. the roads.

However it must be acknowledged that some cyclists are to be blamed, for at times groups of cyclists clustered together and occupy the whole left lane of the road. Which motorist would not get angry, especially in Singapore.

To overcome the dangers, cyclists either cycle early morning or late in the evening and normally on weekends or holidays.

Traffic in the early morning during weekends or holidays are usually light and relatively safe to cycle. The same goes for late in the evenings

But which is better, early morning or night cycling?

On May Day, we did the morning cycle and on the eve of Vesak Day, we did the night cycle.

Both have its advantages and its disadvantages.

But personally I preferred early morning, as the traffic is lighter as compared to the evening and the air is fresher.

For those of you who are urban planners (URA); road planners (LTA); or whatever planner you are, do consider cyclists when you are cracking your heads.

Happy Vesak Day.

HAIL MAY DAY

1st May aka May Day –worldwide it is officially Labour Day.

In Singapore celebrations are usually with unions and government having speeches, giving awards and eating their hearts out and accumulate fats and cholesterol.

While in other countries they have protests and riots in the mist of H1N1 flu outbreak.

What did cyclist do on that day since it is a public holiday – CYCLING OF COURSE!.

We cycle to keep fit. There will be celebration and eating later on – but moderately.

Our group planned a northern cycling route covering an estimated distance of about 60km, not much but a good start.

It is surprising to note that on that day there were a lot of cycling activities around the island, probably more than some of the community’s May Day celebration.

When we stopped one of our “pit-stop” at the junction of Mandai and Woodlands road , to our surprise there were a lot of cyclists also having their "pit stop" there. There were as many as 10 to 20 groups of cyclists. Our group of about 10 was among the smallest group.

Different Cycling groups though strangers, have a spirit of camaraderie. We nodded and smiled when we cross path. At times, we admire and compare our bikes.

Keep it up fellow cyclists. Let cycle and keep fit, enjoy ourselves and keep safe.

Guess what cyclist do on Vesak Day?
